Using AETHER

True 3D sound on any headphones. It runs in your browser, and your audio never leaves your device.

Quick start

1. Plug in your headphones. AETHER’s binaural 7.1 is designed for headphones, not laptop speakers.
2. Open the web app and press Spatialize System Audio.
3. Your browser will ask what to share. Choose a screen or tab and switch on “Share system audio” (or “Share tab audio”). Without that switch, AETHER gets no sound.
4. If you hear the original sound as well as the 3D version, send AETHER to your headphones on the Devices tab and play the original through a different output.
5. Pick a Profile and drag the speakers around the radar until it sounds right.

Browser support

• Chrome, Edge, Brave and other Chromium browsers on Windows and ChromeOS: full support, including whole-system audio.
• Chromium browsers on macOS and Linux: tab audio can be shared. Whole-system audio depends on your OS and browser version.
• Firefox and Safari: these browsers don’t yet let pages capture system or tab audio. Use Load Audio…, Mic Input or the built-in demos instead.
• Phones: mobile browsers can’t share system audio. The Devices tab still works for headphone profiles and file playback.

Sources

• Spatialize System Audio. Processes everything your computer plays, using the browser’s share prompt as described above.
• Surround Test. Walks a test signal around each virtual speaker so you can check left, right, front and back.
• Demo Tone. A built-in sound for hearing the effect straight away.
• Load Audio…. Plays a local audio file. It is read in your browser and never uploaded.
• Mic Input. Spatializes a live microphone or line input.

Profiles

• Gaming. An immersive 7.1 field with rear levels, positional Cue Boost and controller haptics.
• Cinema. Wide cinematic distance, deep LFE, dialogue locked to the centre, and an optional Night Mode.
• Music. A close, front-focused stage with warmth, a gentle “smile” EQ and parallel Punch.
• Balanced. A clean, front-leaning reference. This is the everyday default.

Any change you make to a profile is saved in your browser, so it is still there next time.

Tabs in the app

Mix

This tab has the Spatial Field radar (7.1 virtual HRTF), where you can drag each speaker to reposition it. It also has Profiles, Master controls and Output selection.

Devices

Choose your output device and your headphone profile. There are dedicated controls for supported headsets, such as the Razer Kraken V3 HyperSense.

Integrations

This tab explains how AETHER fits into your audio stack. If you use Razer Synapse, turn THX Spatial Audio off so only one spatializer runs. Keep using Synapse for HyperSense, mic and Chroma settings. AETHER works on the audio signal only. It cannot control other vendors’ software.

Advanced

The Channel Mixer gives you a level and a mute for each of the eight virtual channels.

Multi-Sync

Scan your audio devices, then drive several at once. Mirror plays the same processed audio on every device you tick. Split spreads the surround channels across them. Bluetooth outputs may drift a few milliseconds behind wired ones.

Troubleshooting

• “No system audio”. You didn’t switch on Share system audio or Share tab audio in the prompt. Stop sharing and try again.
• You hear an echo or doubled sound. The original, unprocessed audio is still reaching your ears. Play it through a different output from the one AETHER uses, or turn it down.
• Device names show as “Default” or are blank. Browsers hide device names until microphone permission is granted once. Allow it on the Devices tab. AETHER closes the microphone again immediately.
• The effect sounds too strong or too weak. Change profile, move the speakers closer to or further from the centre of the radar, or lower Punch.
